A CFD prop firm, answered

The idea

What is a CFD prop firm?

A CFD prop firm sells you a simulated trading account and pays you a share of the profit you make on it. At WhitePips you trade forex, gold, oil, stock indices, stocks and crypto as contracts for difference on MetaTrader 5, follow rules published with their exact figures, and keep 80% of the profit, up to 95% as you scale.

What a CFD is
The route

How does a funded CFD account work?

  1. Pick a plan and a size, from $2,500 to $200,000, and pay once.
  2. Pass the evaluation on MetaTrader 5: Edge 1 Step asks for 10% inside a 4% daily and 7.5% maximum loss, with no time limit. Instant plans skip this step.
  3. Get funded and request payouts, by bank transfer or crypto, with a receipt for every request.

Edge 2 Step at $2,500 is the lowest fee; a $100,000 Edge 1 Step is $646. Instant funding starts at $72. There is no subscription, and bundling 2 to 5 accounts takes 10% to 25% off the whole order.

Three programs, six plans. Edge is the evaluation route: Edge 1 Step has a single 10% target with a 7.5% maximum loss, Edge 2 Step splits the target into 7.5% then 5% with a 9% maximum loss, both at an 80% split, up to 95% as you scale. Instant skips the evaluation and funds you the moment you buy: Instant Pro at a 75% split (up to 90% as you scale) with weekly payouts, Instant Go for less at 70% (up to 85%) with bi-weekly payouts. Prime is the evaluation with a salary: pass Edge 1 Step or Edge 2 Step and the funded account earns 1% of its size a month, and a 100% split after 30 days. Sizes run from $2,500 to $200,000 (Instant to $100,000, Prime from $50,000).

A contract on the price

What is a CFD?

You trade the price, not the asset

A contract for difference settles the change in an instrument's price between the moment you open and the moment you close. You never own the euro, the barrel or the share; buy and a rise is credited, sell short and a fall is.

One account, many markets

Forex, stock indices, energy, metals and crypto are all just a price to a CFD, so gold and the Nasdaq sit in the same MetaTrader 5 account, sized in the same units, measured against the same balance.

Sized to any account

Size is continuous: forex goes down to a hundredth of a standard lot, so risk scales to a $5,000 account as precisely as to $200,000, and one rule set means the same thing at every size.

Simulated accounts, real payouts

Every WhitePips account, evaluation and funded, runs on a simulated demo environment at live market prices. No capital is placed at market risk; the payouts are real money paid on measured performance.

A contract on the price

You never own the asset: the position settles the difference between the price you opened at and the price you closed at.

Long: profit if the price risesShort: profit if it falls

Long and short

Buying is going long — you profit if the price rises. Selling is going short — you profit if it falls. A CFD is symmetrical, so there is no borrowing step and no restriction on shorting.

Lot

The unit of size in forex. One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; a mini lot is 0.1 and a micro lot is 0.01. On EUR/USD one pip on a standard lot is roughly $10, on a mini lot roughly $1, on a micro lot roughly $0.10.

Pip

The smallest conventional price increment on a currency pair — the fourth decimal place on most pairs, the second on yen crosses. It is the unit most CFD risk is counted in.

Leverage and margin

Leverage is the ratio between the position you control and the margin held against it. 1:50 means $1,000 of margin supports a $50,000 position. It is a ceiling the platform enforces, not a target: the drawdown limits on your plan will stop you long before the leverage cap does.

Spread

The gap between the buy and sell price. It is the cost of the round trip and it is charged the instant you open, which is why every position starts marginally negative.

Swap

The financing adjustment applied to a position held past the daily rollover. It can be a credit or a debit depending on direction and instrument.

Slippage

The difference between the price you asked for and the price you got, on a fast market. It is normal, it counts against your drawdown like any other loss, and it is the reason a stop is not a guarantee of an exact exit price.

In numbers

Take a $50K Edge 1 Step evaluation. Three published figures decide the whole account: a profit target of $5,000 (10%), a maximum daily loss of $2,000 (4%), and a maximum loss of $3,750 (7.5%). Nothing else on the plan can end it.

The target is the finish line. Reach $5,000 of net profit and meet the day rule (3 days of +0.5% to pass), and the evaluation is passed. There are unlimited trading days, so there is no clock and no reason to force a trade on a Friday afternoon.

The daily loss limit is the floor for one day. It is measured from the day's opening balance, which is the previous day's closing balance, so a day that opens in profit starts from that higher balance. Lose $2,000 in a single day and the account ends: it is a hard breach, not a warning.

The maximum loss is the floor for the account's whole life, and it does not move. It sits $3,750 below the starting balance. Let equity fall through it and the account ends.

One more limit sizes your positions rather than your losses: Max. Exposure, the most your open positions may add up to, which is $1,000,000 on this account. Going over it is not a breach but a strike: during the evaluation the account must be back above its starting balance before a reset is issued, and once funded a strike cuts the next payout to a 10% split.

Put a risk budget against those numbers and the plan sizes itself. Risking half a percent of the account per trade is about $250 on this account: an eighth of the daily allowance, and a fifteenth of the maximum loss. That is the arithmetic the evaluation is really testing.

Funded, the same account keeps its $2,000 (4%) daily limit and its $3,750 maximum loss. The split is 80%, up to 95% as you scale, and payouts run: first payout on demand once funded, then weekly.

A payout is a request, not an automatic transfer. You ask for it from the dashboard once your plan allows, and it is paid by bank transfer, in USDT, USDC, BTC or ETH, or as store credit. Every request is confirmed as received.

The split is the figure you actually receive: 80% up to 95% on the Edge plans, 75% up to 90% on Instant Pro, 70% up to 85% on Instant Go, and on Prime 80% for the first 30 days funded, then 100%. The minimum payout is 1% of the account. A Max. Exposure strike in the cycle cuts that payout to a 10% split.

Prime adds a monthly salary: 1% of the account size a month, accrued daily from the first funded day, and the evaluation fee comes back in full once the account is funded and in profit after 30 days. In return it asks for steady trading, with a weekly consistency band and a 5% quarterly profit target.

Every payout also needs the plan's profitable days in the cycle: three on Edge 1 Step, two on Edge 2 Step, five on Instant Go, none on Instant Pro. Falling short delays a payout rather than closing the account.

How it works

Choose a program and an account size

Trade to the profit target

Trade the account normally. There is no time limit on any CFD evaluation. A phase is passed at its profit target once it also has its profitable days: three days closing at +0.5% of the account size or more on Edge 1 Step, two per phase on Edge 2 Step. On a two step plan, clearing phase one moves you to phase two.

Stay inside the daily loss and the maximum loss

Two limits end an account and both are hard breaches: the maximum daily loss, measured from the day's opening balance, and the maximum loss, fixed below your starting balance. Both are monitored on floating equity as well as closed trades, so an open position that pushes equity through a limit is a breach the moment it happens. Max. Exposure caps the combined size of your open positions; going over it is a strike, not a breach.

Hard breach ends the accountFloating equity countsStatic drawdown

Get funded

Clear the last phase and the simulated funded account is issued, with the evaluation's strikes cleared. Your profitable days now count before each payout, and a Max. Exposure strike cuts the next payout to a 10% split. Without the Weekend Holding add-on, positions still open at 4:45 PM New York time on Friday are closed by the system: the first time is a warning, the second closes the account. On Instant Pro and Instant Go, one symbol's open loss may not float past 1.5% of the starting balance. On Prime the monthly salary starts on the first funded day, and each week your trade count and volume stay within ±25% of your own averages. Trading days are indefinite.

Take your payout, and scale

Your first payout can be requested on demand as soon as the account qualifies; after that, every 7 days (every 14 on Instant Go). The minimum payout is 1% of the account. The split is 80% up to 95% on Edge, 75% up to 90% on Instant Pro, 70% up to 85% on Instant Go, and on Prime 80% for the first 30 days funded, then 100%, with the evaluation fee refunded once the account is funded and in profit after 30 days. A single trader may hold up to $1.5M across all accounts.

The CFD line runs on MetaTrader 5. If you have traded MT4 or MT5 before, everything carries over — your indicators, your templates, your expert advisors and your muscle memory — and the account appears in the same terminal you already use, on web, desktop, iPhone and Android.

That is a deliberate choice rather than a default. Which terminal a firm runs on is a qualifying question for a trader, because it decides whether years of tooling comes with them or is left behind. MT5 is the one platform where the answer is almost always that it comes with them.

CFD questions

Do I own anything when I trade a CFD?

No. A contract for difference settles the difference in price between opening and closing a position. You never take delivery of the currency, the metal, the barrel or the coin, and there is no wallet, custody or transfer at any point.

Is my own money at risk?

No. Every WhitePips account, evaluation and funded, runs on a simulated demo environment against live market prices. No capital of yours is ever placed at market risk. What you pay is the one-time fee. On Prime it is refunded in full once the account is funded and in profit after 30 days.

What is the difference between Edge, Instant and Prime?

Edge is the evaluation route: pass Edge 1 Step or Edge 2 Step and trade funded at an 80% split, up to 95% as you scale. Instant skips the evaluation: you are funded the moment you buy, at 75% (up to 90% as you scale) with weekly payouts, or at 70% (up to 85%) with bi-weekly payouts on Instant Go, which costs less. Prime is an evaluation with a salary: once funded, the account earns 1% of its size a month and, after 30 days, a 100% split.

What is Max. Exposure?

The combined size of all your open positions as a share of the balance, tiered by account size: 5,000% on $2,500 down to 1,000% on $200,000. On a $50,000 account at 2,000% your open positions may total $1,000,000, which is ten standard lots of EUR/USD. Going over it is a strike rather than a breach.

What is the difference between a one step and a two step plan?

How the profit target is split. A one step plan has a single target and you are funded when you reach it. A two step plan splits the journey across two phases with a smaller target in each, at a lower entry price. Neither has a time limit.
