# Drawdown and recovery calculator

A 10% loss needs an 11.1% gain to recover, a 50% loss needs 100%. Enter a loss and a risk per trade to see the recovery and how long a losing streak a plan's limits allow.

- **11.1%** gain that recovers a 10% loss
- **100%** gain that recovers a 50% loss
- **$7,500** Max Loss on a $100K Edge 1 Step

## How it is calculated

Gain to recover = loss ÷ (1 − loss) · Losing streak = limit ÷ (balance × risk per trade)

### Measure the hole

Lose 10% of $100,000 and you have $90,000. A drawdown and the gain that undoes it are not the same size, because the gain is earned on the smaller balance.

### Climb from the smaller balance

Getting back to $100,000 is $10,000 on $90,000, which is 11.1%. At 20% down the recovery is 25%, at 50% down it is 100%. The deeper the hole, the faster the climb steepens, which is why loss limits are set where they are.

### Count the streak

The second half of the tool counts how many full losses in a row fit inside a limit at a fixed risk per trade: limit ÷ (balance × risk).

Worked example

### Losing streaks on a $100K Edge 1 Step

The Max Daily Loss is $4,000 and the Max Loss is $7,500. At 1% risk ($1,000 a trade) that is 4 losing trades in one day and 7 in total; at 0.5% it is 8 and 15.

On WhitePips futures accounts the Maximum Loss Limit trails: on One Step it is end-of-day trailing ($2,000 on $50K), recalculated at each session close and only ever moving up. On a trailing limit, profit taken and then given back still counts against you, so the room left can be less than the starting figure.

### Max Loss, static or trailing

WhitePips CFD plans use a static Max Loss, fixed from the starting balance. The futures plans trail: on One Step the limit is end-of-day trailing ($2,000 on $50K), recalculated at each session close and only ever moving up.

For education. The results are arithmetic on the figures you enter; the contract specification, prices and commission on your platform decide real results. Nothing here is financial advice, and trading leveraged products can lose money.

## Drawdown and recovery calculator: questions

**How much do I need to make back after a 20% loss?**

25%. The gain is earned on the smaller balance: $80,000 needs $20,000 to return to $100,000, which is 25% of $80,000.

**What is the difference between static and trailing drawdown?**

A static limit is fixed from the starting balance and never moves. A trailing limit follows the account's high (or, end-of-day trailing, each session's closing balance) up, and stops once it reaches the starting balance. WhitePips CFD plans use a static Max Loss; the futures plans trail. [Static and trailing drawdown explained](https://whitepips.com/blog/static-and-trailing-drawdown) .

**Does the daily loss reset every day?**

Yes. On CFD accounts it is measured from each day's opening balance, so it refreshes at the start of the trading day. On futures the Daily Loss Limit is soft where a plan sets one: reaching it stops trading for the rest of the day and the account stays open.

**Is a drawdown on a funded account my own money?**

No. WhitePips accounts are simulated; losses reduce the simulated balance and can end the account under its rules, but you are never asked to pay a trading loss. The fee you paid for the account is what you can lose.
